Privacy notice
This notice explains what personal information Hamba Kahle Roads collects, why, who can see it, and your rights under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
Who is responsible
Hamba Kahle Roads is run by the site owner, who is the responsible party and Information Officer for this site. Contact: use the Send feedback button on the site.
What we collect
- Your email address, when you sign in, so we can send you a sign-in link.
- A display name, if you choose one. It's shown on reports you post.
- Your road reports: the road, direction, what you saw, notes, and the time you posted.
- Your location, only when you tap "Use my location", post a quick report, tick "Pin it to my current location" or use "Near me". Reports store a rounded location (to about 100 metres), so they can show on the map without revealing exactly where you were.
- Your votes ("Still there" or "Gone now") on reports.
- Feedback you send us, and your email if you choose to include it.
- Basic visit statistics, such as pages viewed and device type, collected without cookies and not linked to your name or email.
Your browser also remembers the last road you typed and your display name on your own device. This never leaves your phone or computer.
Why we use it
- To let you sign in, post reports and vote.
- To show other drivers what's happening on the roads.
- To fix problems, prevent abuse and improve the site.
We rely on your consent (for example, when you share your location) and on our legitimate interest in running a useful, safe road-information service. We don't sell your information or use it for advertising.
Who can see it
- Everyone who visits the site can see reports, including the display name, road, notes, time and rounded location on the map. Reports aren't linked to your account publicly, and your votes are private. Don't put anything private in a report.
- Nobody else sees your email address. It's only used for signing in.
- Service providers that run the site for us: Supabase (database and sign-in), Vercel (hosting and visit statistics), OpenStreetMap (map images and road-name lookup, which receive your device's internet address when the map loads or you tap "Use my location") and our email provider (sends sign-in links).
- Authorities, only if the law requires it.
Storage outside South Africa
Our service providers may store or process information on servers outside South Africa. We use providers that protect personal information to a standard comparable to POPIA.
How long we keep it
- Reports show on the site for up to 14 days and stay in our database until you or we delete them.
- Your account stays until you ask us to delete it.
- Feedback is kept only as long as we need it to deal with what you raised.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you,
- correct it,
- delete your account and reports,
- stop using your information for a particular purpose.
You can delete your own reports at any time from the feed. For anything else, email the site owner. If you're not happy with our response, you can complain to the Information Regulator.
Security
Information is sent over encrypted connections. Database rules make sure people can only post as themselves and delete only their own reports. No system is perfectly secure, so please don't share sensitive information in reports.
Children
This site is meant for drivers and isn't aimed at anyone under 18.
Changes
If we change this notice, we'll update the date at the top. Big changes will also be announced on the site.
